06: Elena Muratore

Elena mi ha invitato ad incontrarla in una pasticceria / gelateria siciliana che si chiama “Ciuri Ciuri” e si trova nella zona Monti in via Leonina. Ci incontriamo lì di fonte verso le 11 e ci sediamo dentro. E’ un posto piccolo ma molto accogliente e siamo quasi le uniche persone a quest’ora in questo lunedì mattina splendente. La cameriera viene a chiederci che cosa vogliamo; chiedo a Elena di consigliarmi qualcosa. Ridendo mi dice “Quanto sono siciliana, guarda dove ti ho portato!” ed è così che scopro che Elena è siciliana. Ordiniamo due caffé e diversi dolci tipici.
 
Elena has invited me to meet her at a Sicilian bakery / ice-cream parlour called “Ciuri Ciuri” which is located in via Leonina, the Monti area of Rome. We meet in front if it at 11 and take a seat inside. It’s a small place but very welcoming and we are almost the only people in there at this hour of a sunny Monday morning. The waitress comes and asks what we want and I ask Elena to recommend something. Laughing she says “Since I am Sicilian, just see where I’ve brought you!” and it was then I discovered that Elena is Sicilian. We order coffee and some typical Sicilian pastries.

Di origine di Siracusa, è arrivata a Roma per studiare raggiungendo il fratello (allora studente di giurisprudenza).  Elena invece ha frequentato il DAMS (Discipline delle Arti della Musica e dello Spettacolo) e si è laureata un paio di anni fa. Sta finendo la sua tesi per laurearsi come specialista in cinema a maggio, spera. Sta scrivendo su Wim Wenders, un regista tedesco che ha girato “Il cielo sopra Berlino” fra tanti altri film. Già prima di trasferirsi, Elena aveva una penfriend a Roma che veniva a trovare spesso, approfittando per assistere a qualche concerto.

Originally from Siracusa, she came to Rome to study, joining her brother (who was a jurisprudence student). Elena chose to study DAMS (A course in Art, Music and Performing Arts) and she graduated a couple of years ago. She is in the process of writing her thesis to graduate in May as a specialist in cinema, she hopes. She is writing about Wim Wenders, a German director who directed “The Sky Above Berlin” amongst many other films. Before coming to Rome, Elena had a pen friend here who she came to visit often, taking advantage of this to go to concerts.

Parliamo un po’ di una differenza che ho notato fra i britannici e gli italiani – il fatto che in Italia parlano sempre del regista del film, mentre in Inghilterra parlano sempre degli attori. "Non è così strano" mi spiega Elena "in Italia siamo cresciuti col peso di grandi registi come Fellini, Antonioni, Bertolucci, a discapito purtroppo degli attori - quindi quando parliamo dei film chiediamo sempre ‘di chi è?’ invece di ‘con chi è?’. In Inghilterra magari vantate più attori famosi, vere e proprie star internazionali.”

We talk a little about one of the differences I’ve noticed between Brits and Italians – the fact that in Italy they always talk about the Director of the film, whereas in Britain we talk about actors. “It’s not so strange,” Elena explains “in Italy we grow up with great directors such as Fellini, Antonioni, and Bertolucci, unfortunately at the expense of the actors – so when we talk about films we always ask ‘who’s it by?’ rather than ‘who’s  in it?’ In Britain, perhaps you have more famous real actors, stars at an international level.”

Mentre studia lavora: “Il mio papà non voleva che lavorassi prima di laurearmi,” mi dice “ma era importante cominciare ad essere indipendente (anche se a fatica). Attualmente mi divido tra progetti indipendenti di teatro e video e un’attività part time presso un caffè letterario.. in entrambe i casi: produzione ed organizzazione.”

While she’s studying she’s also working: “My dad didn’t want me to work before I graduate” she says “but it was important for me to start to be independent (even if it is difficult). Currently I divide my time between independent theatrical projects and videos and a part-time job at a literary bar... in both cases: production and organisation.”

Uno dei progetti cui ha partecipato ultimamente la vedeva come produttore esecutivo sul set del video “La mia professoressa di italiano” della cantautrice romana Ilenia Volpe. Le confesso di essersi rivelata molto professionale ai miei occhi, organizzando tutto in modo tranquillo ma con fermezza. “Non sono un’artista. Non ho dei talenti particolari” mi dice “ma mi piace tanto fare questo lavoro.” Le dico che sicuramente è un talento fare un lavoro come quello che ho visto sul set di Ilenia. Non ci sono tante persone che possono gestire la gente. “In realtà sono un piuttosto timida” mi dice e scopriamo che siamo simili in questo aspetto, che preferiamo parlare a tu per tu. Mentre in gruppo tendiamo a restare in silenzio.

One of the projects in which she participated recently was as executive producer on the set of the video “La mia professoressa di italiano” (“My Italian teacher” by the Roman singer songwriter Ilenia Volpe. I tell her that in my opinion she was very professional, organising everything quietly but firmly. “I’m not an artist. I don’t have any special talents,” she says “but I like doing this type of work.” I tell her that it really is a talent to be able to work as I saw her on Ilenia’s video set. There are not many people who can manage others. “Really I’m rather shy” she says and we discover that we are similar in this respect, that we prefer to talk one on one whereas in groups we have a tendency to remain silent.

“Lavorare accanto ad un regista ti da tanto” dice “ma allo stesso tempo il suo essere geniale può diventare problematico da gestire. Metto al servizio degli artisti la lucidità e l’obiettività utili per fare, a volte, delle scelte. Sono un po’ come il Mago di Oz che, da dietro le quinte, organizza tutto senza farsi scoprire”. Suggerisco che è lei che rende concreti i sogni degli altri... e ride (smentendomi), come ha fatto anche prima, un riso che viene naturalmente, come la musica.

a part time lover and a full time friend

“Working alongside a director gives you a lot,” she says “but at the same time as being ingenious they can be difficult to manage. I provide artists with the clarity and objectivity sometimes needed to make choices. I’m a little bit like the Wizard of Oz, who behind the scenes organises everything without being seen.” I suggest that it is she who gives substance to others' dreams… she laughs (denying it),  a laugh which just as before, comes naturally like music.

Ha una citazione sul suo profilo di Facebook: a part time lover and a full time friend. “L’ho rubato da un film che si chiama Juno,” mi dice, “credo che l’amicizia sia una costante nella vita, mentre l’amore può essere molto variabile. L’amicizia è molto importante per me, sono fortunata ad avere una “seconda famiglia” a Roma – quando siamo in difficoltà possiamo contare gli uni sugli altri, a qualsiasi ora. Per questo sono un’amica full time.” Parliamo anche un po’ di amore, ma non ne parlerò qui. Mi confessa: “Non volevo parlare di amore, ma mi hai messo a mio agio” – sono contento che ho fatto il mio “lavoro” bene!

She has a quote on her Facebook profile: a part time lover and a full time friend. “I stole it from a film called Juno,” she says “I believe that friendship is a constant in life while love can be more variable. Friendship is very important to me and I’m very lucky to have a “second family” here in Rome – when we have difficulties we can contact each other whenever. This is why I am a full time friend.” We also talk about love, but I won’t talk about that here. “I didn’t want to talk about love, but you’ve put me at my ease” she confesses – I’m glad that I have done my “job” well!

Alla fine, Elena mi offre la colazione (“sei mio ospite!”). Questo posto lo consiglio a tutti, sia per i prezzi onesti che per i dolci che producono.. davvero deliziosi e incantevoli! Ho un appuntamento fra due ore e non ha senso tornare a casa subito. Elena anche non ha fretta e camminiamo un po’ nelle bellissime strade di Monti. Anche come Stella l’altro giorno è una zona che ama Elena: “Quando mi hai proposto la colazione insieme” mi dice “sapevo subito che volevo portati qui.” Poi mi spiega che “Ciuri ciuri” significa “Fiori fiori” in italiano e viene da una canzone famosa in Sicilia che parla di un amore finito e di una ragazza che vuole ridare tutti i fiori che ha ricevuto indietro.”  Ci salutiamo all’entrata della metro e mi abbraccia forte dicendo che spera che questa sia l’inizio di un'amicizia. Direi che non lo spero, lo so.

At the end, Elena offers me breakfast (“you’re my guest!”). I recommend this place to everyone, both for the honest prices and for the incredible delicious pastries.! I have another appointment in two hours and it doesn’t make sense for me to return home first. Elena isn’t in a hurry either so we go for a little walk in the beautiful streets of Monti. Just like Stella the other day, Elena loves this area: “When you suggested breakfast together” she says “I knew immediately that I had to bring you here.” She then tells me that “Ciuri ciuri” literally means “Flowers flowers” and comes from a famous Sicilian song about the end of love and a girl who wants to give back all the flowers she received.” We say our goodbyes at the entrance to the metro and she gives me a big hug saying she hopes this will be the beginning of a friendship. I would say I don’t hope, I know.
