03: Stella Ziggiotti

E’ da un po’ che provo ad organizzare un incontro con Stella. Ci siamo conosciuti l’anno scorso tramite Google+. Stella ricorda di avermi trovato quando ha visto un foto di Oz, uno dei miei gatti, poi mi ha aggiunto anche su Facebook. Comunque, a parte altre cose, volevamo andare ad un aperitivo vegano a San Lorenzo ma per un motivo o un altro in quattro mesi non ci siamo riusciti.

I’ve been trying to arrange a meeting with Stella for a while now. We met last year on Google+. Stella remembers finding me when she saw a photo of Oz, one of my cats, and then she also added me on Facebook. Anyway, apart from other things, we wanted to go to a vegan aperitivo in San Lornezo but for one reason or another in four months we have never managed to do so.

Oggi, invece, ci incontriamo a La Bottega del Caffé in Piazza Madonna dei Monti. Il bar si trova in una piccola piazza con fontana, carina e tranquilla. Ha scelto questo bar perché ama la zona e i suoi piccoli negozi, quasi tutti a gestione famigliare. E’ una zona dove si trovano ancora veri romani e pochi turisti, anche se è vicino al Colosseo. Il bar ha dei posti coperti fuori, ci sediamo e ordiniamo un succo d'arancia per Stella, un caffè per me e un cornetto integrale a testa. Come nelle due interviste precedenti parliamo prima di Roma. Anche Stella trova il traffico fastidioso e i mezzi pubblici insoddisfacenti. Non le piace neanche l’atteggiamento romano, sebbene lo sia anche lei, di rimandare le cose a domani invece di farle oggi. Al di la' di queste cose comunque le piace Roma: "i romani sono aperti e amichevoli" mi spiega “e poi, a volte mi piace far finta che sia una turista, andare in giro e vedere Roma con occhi diversi, nuovi.” Fra poco, però, per motivi lavorativi, lascerà la sua città natale: va a vivere a Milano. Lavora nel mondo televisivo e ci saranno più opportunità di crescere professionalmente a Milano. “E’ una città un po’ grigia" mi dice, “magari vivrò li solo per un paio di anni.”

Today, we have arranged to meet at La Bottega del Caffé in Piazza Madonna dei Monti. The bar is located in a little square with a fountain, quaint and tranquil. She chose this bar because she loves the neighbourhood and its small shops, almost all family run. It’s an area where you can still find real Romans and only a few tourists in spite of being close to the Coloseum. The bar has some tables outside, we sit down and order a fresh orange juice for Stella, a coffee for me and a wholemeal croissants each. Just as with the previous interviews we first talk about Rome. Stella also finds the traffic irritating and public transport unsatisfactory. She also doesn’t like the Roman attitude, even if she too is like this, of leaving things for tomorrow instead of doing them today. In spite of this she likes Rome: “Romans are open and friendly” she explains, “and sometimes I like to pretend to be a tourist and go around looking at Rome with new eyes.” Soon, however, for work reasons she is leaving her home town: she is going to live in Milan. She works in the world of television and there are more opportunities to further her career in Milan. “It’s a little gray as a city” she says “perhaps I’ll live there only for a couple of years.”

Parliamo dei suoi interessi: “Probabilmente ho ne troppi” mi dice ridendo “e non trovo il tempo per fare tutto.” L'Ashtanga yoga è una parte importante della sua vita da almeno dieci anni. Ha già viaggiato molto per lo yoga, Londra, stati uniti, nord Europa, però vorrebbe andare in India, passare un paio di mesi studiando yoga ma anche visitandone la bellezza.  Il vegetarianismo ha seguito lo yoga naturalamente, ma non da subito. “Alcun persone con cui faccevo yoga non capivano come potessi fare praticare e poi mangiare un panino con prosciutto “ mi dice “piano piano, mi sono resa conto che non volevo mangiare più carne, e' stato graduale e 4 anni fa ho smesso completamente di mangiare animali.” Oggi è vegana a casa e vegetariana fuori di casa, come me. Mi dice che non è così difficile essere vegetariana in italia, ci sono tanti piatti vegetariani. Poi, per lei non è neanche difficile essere vegana perché ha sempre avuto un'intolleranza ai latticini da quando era piccola. Le dico che prima di  andare in Sicilia per la prima volta, un paio di anni fa, la mia ospite mi ha chiesto: “Ma non mangi neanche pesce?” e ovviamente la mia risposta è stata "No”... poi mi ha guardato perplessa e mi ha detto “Non so che cosa potremo darti a mangiare.” Invece, ho mangiato molto bene... probabilmente il miglior cibo mangiato in italia.

We talk a bit about her interests: “I probably have too many” she says laughing “and I don’t have time to do everything.” Ashtanga yoga has been an important part of her life for at least ten years. She has already travelled many times for yoga to London, the USA and the north of Europe, but she would like to go to India for a couple of months to study yoga and to see its beauty. Vegetarianism followed on from yoga naturally, but not immediately. “Some people who I did yoga with didn’t understand how I could do yoga and then eat a panino with ham” she says “but slowly, I realised that I no longer wanted to eat meat, it was a gradual process, and four years ago I stopped eating animals completely.” Today she is vegan at home and vegetarian out of home, like me. She says that it’s not so hard for her to be vegan because she’s been lactose intolerant since she was young. I tell her that before I want to Sicily for the first time a couple of years ago, my host asked me: “Do you not even eat fish?” and obviously I answered “No”… she then looked at me puzzled and said “I don’t know what we will be able to give you to eat.” However, I ate very well indeed … perhaps even the best food I have eaten in Italy.

Purtroppo oggi tutti sono fotografi, o almeno pensano di esserlo.

La fotografia è un'altra sua passione. “Ho iniziato a passare tempo in camera oscura quando avevo 8 anni” mi dice “però oggi uso esclusivamente il digitale. Purtroppo oggi tutti sono fotografi, o almeno pensano di esserlo" si lamenta. E su questo mi trova molto d'accordo. L'arrampicata e lo Snowboarding sono altri due hobbies che ama, ma mi dice di non riuscire a praticarli da un po'.

Photography is another passion. “I started passing time in the dark room when I was 8” she says “but today I only use digital. Unfortunately these days everyone is a photographer, or thinks so” she complains. I completely agree with her. Climbing and snowboarding are two other hobbies she loves but she tells me that it’s been a while since she did either.

Alla fine parliamo della musica, sopratutto quella underground. “Purtroppo” mi dice, “ci sono tante persone con un mentalità un po’ chiusa che non riescono ad apprezzare e godersi diversi generi musicali – se ti piace il rock, sembra tu debba ascoltare solo rock.” La invito ad un concerto di Giorgio Canali a Le Mura la prossima serata e mi dice che se riesce passa volentieri. "L'ho ascoltato molti anni fa, non era ben conosciuto" continua "invece in questi giorni tutti parlano di lui e tutti vogliano vederlo."

Finally we talk about music, especially underground music. “Unfortunately” she says, “there are many close-minded people who are unable to appreciate and enjoy different types of music – if you like rock, it seems you have to listen only to rock.” I invite her to a Giorgio Canali gig that’s taking place the next day and she says she will be pleased to come if she can. “I listened to him many years ago, when he was not well known” she continues “however nowadays everyone talks about him and wants to see him.”

Quando partiamo, non posso non pensare che sia un peccato non essersi riusciti ad incontrare l’anno scorso, in ogni caso oggi giorno siamo fortunati perché la tecnologia ci permette non solo di trovare nuovi amici ma anche rimanerci facilmente in contatto.

When we part, I cannot help but think that it’s a shame we didn’t manage to meet up last year, but in any case we are lucky because technology not only allows us to make new friends but to keep in contact easily.
